Micronas' M2 Chip First to Enable TeleWeb in Television Sets (0118)

- Trade News | 0118

Freiburg (Germany), August 27, 2001 - Micronas presented its M2 highly integrated chip that enables TV sets to receive TeleWeb services. The M2 offers high performance at low cost and has been deployed in the majority of TeleWeb-equipped TV sets developed to date.

Several manufacturers presented the first TeleWeb-equipped TV sets at the IFA in Berlin in preparation for their launch this fall. The high flexibility of the M2 chip will allow Micronas to also aim at deployment in various other display systems like car-navigation systems, vending machines and communication appliances.

"A 16-bit controller is the heart of the M2 and allows for cost-efficient production whilst the graphics capabilities of the chip enable the high level of performance that television set manufacturers are looking for today" said Ingo Hecht, product marketing manager at Micronas.

An integrated graphic controller and a pixel-based display generator via frame buffer enable the chip to transport PC-related applications to the world of consumer electronics. Furthermore, the chip supports Teletext (up to level 2.5), electronic program guides like NexTView, intuitive user guides and HTML-based applications.

The M2 integrates a high-performance 16-bit controller display generator, an interface with external generators, a digital slicer allowing four programmable data services per VBI field and an integrated screen refresh unit that supports all display modes. The on-chip 2D-graphic accelerator supports the controller and enables the high graphics performance of the M2.

Micronas offers software drivers, development tools and a display simulator with the chip, simplifying integration for TV manufacturers who can implement the chip without having to deal with the details of this highly complex chip. A dedicated browser enables the chip to receive the HTML-based TeleWeb.

The M2 is available as SDA 6000 and comes in a plastic MQFP-128 package. The price per chip for high volumes is expected to be below 5 €.
