Micronas’ new audio processor meets ever-increasing demand for analog and digital I/O with a powerful DSP for home audio applications (0613)
The new MAP-M delivers system cost reduction via complete integration and flexibility via Customizable Modular Processing
Freiburg, Germany, June 27, 2006 - Micronas (SWX Swiss Exchange: MASN), a leading supplier of innovative application-specific IC system solutions for consumer electronics, combines a DSP running Customizable Modular Processing (CMP) technology with digital and analog audio interfaces to deliver a cost-effective highly integrated audio system-on-chip platform. Customers can flexibly program the device. Surpassing existing solutions, the new MAP 54/560xM and MAP 44/460xM IC family (MAP-M) combines in a single device a powerful DSP and multiple digital and analog inputs and outputs that today’s audio applications require. This integration eliminates the need for extra components, reduces cost, and makes advanced features available at moderate price points. With a 24/48 bit QuadMAU® DSP, MAP-M is ideal for component audio systems, integrated stereo systems, and home theater systems.
Digital audio sources such as CD and DVD players or set-top boxes connect to MAP-M via the multiple on-chip S/PDIF inputs and outputs. Each S/PDIF input can be routed through the DSP for processing or connected directly to an S/PDIF output. HDMI-sources or audio signals from other ICs interface to MAP-M via I2S interfaces featuring high-quality sample-rate converters. Asynchronous I2S outputs enable to integrate other sub-systems such as hard disk recording into an audio-device.
MAP-M features integrated Pulse-Width Modulators (PWMs) based on Micronas’ Hi-Resolution PWM technology, which delivers a detail-rich and natural sound. MAP-M’s PWM outputs can directly drive Class-D power amplifier stages, thus reducing cost and complexity.
Analog sources from up to six channels can be routed through MAP-M’s built-in multiplexers to six on-chip A/D converters. A built-in preamplifier allows glueless connection of microphones and phonographs. RIAA phono equalization is done digitally for greater precision.
On the output side, multibit Sigma-Delta D/A converters with 110 dB dynamic range and analog volume control deliver output signals to linear amplifiers and line-out connections. All this makes MAP-M the ideal core solution for two- to six-channel systems.
Stefan Hepp, Director of Marketing, Consumer Audio at Micronas, explains: “We enable high-quality home audio applications at a price point suitable for cost-sensitive manufacturers. The DSP expertise Micronas has gained across millions of audio ICs and our system integration know-how are now available in a powerful silicon platform.”
By offering Customizable Modular Processing, Micronas goes a step further than merely offering features. CMP gives each manufacturer the ability to customize the audio system to the exact capabilities required for each individual application. Using field-proven blocks built into the Micronas DSP ROM, audio functions can be placed into signal paths individually and virtually wired by software. With this method, the designer can use exactly the DSP blocks needed, and place them precisely where he wants. CMP gives manufacturers more design freedom to better tailor the available DSP power to individual requirements and reduces their time-to-market.
DSP code download capability in an audio system-on-chip opens the door for unlimited differentiation and flexibility while avoiding the cost for an extra DSP. Manufacturers can combine their own proprietary audio algorithms, such as company-specific bass enhancement or voice processing, with pre-programmed DSP functions available from Micronas, or they can port licensed third-party audio technologies to further extend functionality.
The basic algorithms include multiple parametric equalizers and graphic equalizers, bass enhancement, A/V LipSync delay, bass management, subwoofer filter, and speaker downmix. Royalty-free add-on technologies include Micronas VOICE+, Micronas ALIGN+, Micronas SOUNDFIELD+, Micronas NIGHT+, Micronas KARAOKE+, and Micronas AROUND+. Branded audio technologies from companies such as Audistry, BBE, Dolby and SRS are available under license.
Samples of MAP-M are available now. Prices range from Euro 4.50 to 8 depending on product type.
