The "f-cell Bronze Medal" innovation award of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg goes to Micronas and the University of Freiburg.

Freiburg, Germany, September 30, 2009 - The Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of Environment and the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation have awarded the "f-cell Bronze Medal" to the University of Freiburg and to Micronas (SIX Swiss Exchange: MASN a leading supplier of innovative application-specific IC and sensor system solutions for automotive electronics and industrial. Both partners received this award for the development of a chip-integrated source of energy based on an intelligent, monolithically integrated micro fuel cell cascade, sponsored by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Research and Education) and the State Foundation Baden-Wuerttemberg. In the opinion of the jury, there is a substantial market potential for the chip-integrated power supply.

Karl Hoffmann, head of future technologies at Micronas, said: “We are proud that our research project has met with such a positive response by the business and science community. Micronas has for many years entertained and cultivated successful partnerships with renowned businesses and research facilities. I²Brenn is a good example, where we first commissioned and funded master’s diplomas and doctorate theses which eventually evolved into a joint project supported by public funds. The results we accomplished together with our partner, the University of Freiburg, bring us a big step closer to our objective of making an integrated, self-regulating power supply“.

The research award ceremony was held on September 28, 2009, during the f-cell conference in Stuttgart. Business enterprises, scientific facilities and institutions from the whole of Europe had been invited to submit promising developments in the field of mobile, portable and stationary fuel cells.
